Driller: He/she will undertake a high responsibility level and is responsible for what goes on above and on the rig floor. This person has a good background of technical knowledge and drill experience. They operate the drill equipment that will create the hole in the seabed. They also have a great knowledge about the well pressure systems, drilling fluids/ characteristics and emergency procedures. Has obtained this position after many years of working as a Derrickman or roughneck under their belt. Has a general salary of £46,000 or US$66,000.

Assistant Driller: This person works as the supervisor for the Roughneck and the Derrickman. The tasks include the assistance to the driller and perform the tasks required when a drilling operation is in session. Can also be known as trainee driller and will help floorhands with tasks required when required. Has an average salary of £40,000 or US$54,000.

Derrickman: He/she has a job description, which includes the fine operation and general maintenance of the mud, and mud pumps and other machines used in the pump room. Has a general salary of £35,000 or US$60,000. May also assist the Roughnecks on drill floor when required climb up the drilling tower and help with racking the drill pipe, which is removed from the drill hole. Obtained this name as they spend a lot of their time on top of the derrick-racking pipe and can otherwise be found in the pump room. Can also be required to mix the drilling fluids or mud and ensure the mix is accurate with the correct chemicals and consistency.

Pumpman: Has an average salary of £27,000 or US$55,000. This person works as the assistant to the Derrickman and can work in the mud pump room or assist as a roughneck on the drill floor when required. Also can be known as Assistant Derrickman.

Roughneck: This person generally works on the rig floor and has an average starting salary of US $55,000 or £28,000 a year. Responsible for the machines and equipment that is used for the drilling operation. Usually works in a group of three Roughnecks. Can also be required to work as laborer's on the rig floor. One of the pieces of equipment a roughneck uses is tongs that is a big device that can tighten or loosen the drill pipe when needed. The supervisor of the roughneck is generally the Chief Driller. This job is great for people with experience in welding and mechanics. Though physically demanding this job is rewarding with a starting salary of US $43,000 to $47,000 a year. A roughneck is entitled to the benefits of medical insurance, free meals, board and room and airfares for by the employer.
